Gum health is paramount in maintaining your teeth. It is like the foundation of a building. Regular hygiene visits with the dental hygienist is needed to remove the tartar that is beneath the gums, which your toothbrush cannot reach. We all leave plaque behind, which hardens to tartar, and if tartar is left in place for some time, the bone support around teeth starts to “melt” away. There are usually no symptoms or signs that this is happening until it is too late and the patient gets an abscess or the tooth is loose. Regular gum checks by the hygienist will ensure that a problem is detected early.
Not all dental scalings are the same though. The old, conventional method of scaling by feel or using a standard ultrasonic tip to scrape at tartar above the gums is less effective and leaves tartar beneath the gums. Hand scaling above the gums is only good for removing very light tartar and plaque. The key to success is the skill of the clinician to remove the tartar gently and thoroughly beneath the gums by direct vision.
At Essential Dental, we use 6x magnification loupes with 55000 lux LED light so that we can visualise the root surface. Very fine ultrasonic scaler tips are then employed to remove the beneath-the-gums tartar. The hygienists are all personally trained by Dr Yasmin to achieve a much higher success rate of halting gum or periodontal disease than what a regular hygienist can do. This minimises cost to the patient and the need for gum surgery.
Essential Dental is also Guided Biofilm Therapy certified. We use the EMS Prophlaxis Master and Airflow for the prophylaxis of teeth and most importantly, implants. Implants do need regular cleans but with specialised instruments that protect their surfaces and yet able to reach the spaces beneath the implant crown.
Tooth Extraction
We would prefer to preserve teeth as much as possible, as losing teeth affects a patient’s self-esteem, chewing function and overall health. Replacing teeth are also actually more expensive than trying to preserve them. Unfortunately, in some cases, extractions may be the only solution.
At Essential Dental, we would like to discuss your options for replacing the tooth prior to extracting it, as this can affect the method of removal of the tooth, as well as the need to re-graft the bone that will be lost after extraction. In these modern times, teeth are now not simply removed with no consideration of what comes next, and at Essential Dental, we recognise this and plan for the future needs of each patient.
Fillings Crowns & Bridges
Fillings, crowns and onlays all restore a tooth to its natural shape and function. We restore teeth that are broken from decay or chipped off due to grinding or trauma. With the advent of better and stronger materials, these restorative options are the keystone for maintaining healthy and lasting teeth.
Modern filling materials last longer and come in a larger range of shades to provide for better aesthetics. Bridges are fused crowns that provide another option for replacing teeth, besides implants and dentures.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is sometimes necessary when the “nerve” of the tooth is encroached or exposed due to decay or trauma. The tooth becomes sore when this happens, and by removing the “nerve”, cleaning the canals with specialised instruments and filling within the canals, our dentists can prevent a tooth from needing an extraction.
Different teeth have one or more canals and sometimes the configuration of these canals are tricky. A diagnosis and assessment is made at the time of consult and when needed our dentist will refer you to a root canal specialist.
Implant Therapy
Implant dentistry is a specialised field for the replacement of missing teeth. This is done with titanium fixtures placed in the jawbone. These fixtures are used to support missing teeth. Dentists will place the titanium fixtures and some time is necessary for the bone to heal completely around these fixtures, after which crowns can be placed via intermediate abutments.
Computer-aided dental implant treatment is used. The recent development of our digital workspace has fully integrated various technologies (that improve the predictability and safety of implant treatment) using computer aided technology.
Gum Treatment
This encompasses both non-surgical and surgical treatments to stop gum disease, preserve teeth and in some cases, re-grow both gum and bone support for the teeth.
This also includes the correction of gum recession. Consultations about gum disease are done by Dr Yasmin and treatment is a combination of initial non-surgical therapy by her specialised hygienists and more advanced treatment by her. This combination works to reduce cost for the patient, yet achieving a good treatment outcome.
Free Child & Adolescent Care
If your child meets the eligibility criteria for publicly funded health and disability services, they are entitled to free basic oral health services from birth to 18 years of age. Your local District Health Board (DHB) or the newly-formed Health New Zealand pays for basic dental services until the young person turns 18. The cost of treatment includes the following:
- Routine examinations, which include checking teeth for decay and looking at the gums and mouth for any problems.
- X-rays used to find tooth decay and other problems.
- Fluoride treatment, which helps make the surface of the teeth more resistant to decay.
- Fissure sealants, which are a thin layer of white filling, painted onto teeth that are at risk of developing tooth decay.
- Cleaning plaque, stains and tartar from teeth.
- Fillings
- Extractions, to remove teeth that have been badly affected by tooth decay.
- Root Canal Therapy.
- Oral health education.
Please note: The only adolescent treatments that are not covered by the Ministry of Health are cosmetic dental treatment and orthodontic related treatment.
